Session 1: “Introduction to Understanding Gender in the Workplace”
Program Goals: Foundational Understanding of Gender
Identify and understand the core terms and concepts related to gender.
Make connections between LGBTQ+ equality and ACP values to incorporate at work.
Understand some day-to-day assumptions, interactions, and barriers that impact the experience of non-binary, trans,
and gender diverse staff.Leave with tangible tools to utilize as an effective ally in action to the LGBTQ+ community and/or for self-advocacy.
Topics include:
Understanding the difference between gender identity, gender expression, and sex (with their definitions and terminology and examples)
Understanding gender as a spectrum
What it means to be transgender and cisgender
Impact of assumptions: Gender attribution & gender roles and stereotypes: what they are and how to move beyond binary assumptions into a place of inclusion
Misgendering: what it is and it’s negative impact
Pronouns: what they are, why we use them, how we use them (and what to do when mistakes happen)
Inclusive, gender neutral language: what it is, why we use it, how we use it
Recap: how to model and signal inclusion at work through respectful and consistent use of inclusive, gender neutral language and pronouns, not acting on assumptions, and visually showing support and allyship
