Standing in Our Power — A Celebration of Trans Joy and Resiliency
with Lex Horwitz

As we approach the International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) on March 31st, we invite you to take part in celebrating the trans community through a dynamic and powerful event.

Trans Day of Visibility is about more than awareness—it is about empowerment. Started by trans advocate Rachel Crandall in 2010, TDOV was created as a day to celebrate trans lives while recognizing the ongoing discrimination many in the community face. With the majority of Americans learning about trans people through media, often through harmful misrepresentations, it is critical to amplify authentic, diverse, and accurate stories that reflect the lived experiences of trans individuals.

In this program, Lex Horwitz (he/they) will use the power of storytelling to share their journey as a trans person, discussing resilience, advocacy, and self-love. Through an inspirational and authentic voice, Lex will highlight both the challenges and triumphs of living as one’s true self—something we all deserve to do.

Event Structure:  Two Zoom sessions on March 27th
Part 1 - Open to All: A powerful storytelling experience where Lex shares their journey, exploring themes of authenticity, resiliency, and advocacy. This is an opportunity for allies to show up for their trans colleagues and community members, offering support and solidarity, while gaining advocacy skills.

Part 2 - For Trans, Non-Binary, and Gender Diverse (and questioning) Participants: A more intimate space for trans and gender-diverse attendees to connect, share experiences, and engage in meaningful conversation about identity, resilience, and community care. This portion will focus on fostering support, self-care, and celebrating the beauty of our identities. This session is open to people who are questioning their gender. If you are someone who is not cisgender, you are welcome in this space. You do not have to be out to attend this session -- we understand that we have colleagues who are in community who are not out at work (or in other settings) and we want this to be a space for you to cultivate community.

To ensure a safe and supportive space, neither event will be recorded. Additionally, we will take active precautions to keep the second portion of the event as private as possible, allowing trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse attendees to share openly in a secure and respectful setting.

Complete Event Description

In this dynamic program, Lex (he/they) uses the power of storytelling to share their journey and experiences as a person of trans experience, discussing resiliency, advocacy, and self-love. Through an inspirational and authentic voice, Lex shares the challenges and the triumphs of existing as your true self – something we all deserve to do. Navigating the world as a trans person has never been easy, especially now. This program is an opportunity for allies to show up for their trans community members in an event where we uplift, cherish, and celebrate the existence, power, and resiliency of all non-binary and transgender people. Attendees of all identities and backgrounds are encouraged to attend the first half of the program.

For the second part of the program, non-binary, trans, and gender diverse community members are invited for an intimate celebration of and conversation on our identities, paired with the opportunity to share our stories and lean on community for support and resources. Providing this safe space for community members to share their experiences and tell their stories, this program further expands on the themes of resiliency and the power of living your truth, focusing on building community through shared experiences and advocacy, self-care, and community-care practices.

Our identities are something to celebrate and cherish everyday – we will conclude our program with self-love, self-care, and community care tools to take forward into our everyday lives, centering the vital role of resiliency, because it’s time for us to not only exist, but thrive.

Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV) is a day to celebrate the lives and contributions of trans people – raising awareness – while also calling attention to the discrimination and violence the community faces. On TDOV we empower trans folks to live authentically while acknowledging the courage it takes to live openly as your true self.

Started by trans advocate Rachel Crandall in 2010, she hoped to create a day where people could celebrate the lives of trans people while still acknowledging that due to discrimination, not every trans person can or wants to be visible.

The majority of Americans say that they do not personally know someone who’s transgender, with the vast majority of the public learning about trans people from the media. This is a problem given that the media misrepresents, mischaracterizes, and stereotypes trans people, with these false depictions shaping cultural (mis)understandings of who trans people are and how cisgender people should react and treat trans folks.

That is why it is critical for trans people to be seen through authentic, diverse and accurate stories, which reflect the actual lived experiences of trans people. Today, as Lex shares their story with us we are reminded that there are trans people in every community across time, history, place, and culture – and that includes our community of people we serve and our colleagues – and we must show up for, and affirm, everyone in the work that we do.
