Trans in Athletics: Inclusion and What Does It Mean to Be Fair?
Time: 10:15 am - 11:30 am
Session Description:
Misinformation and disinformation are driving fear and discrimination of trans athletes, primarily transfeminine people. We will understand how to approach the “debate” based on current legal, medical, and scientific knowledge, dismantling two core misconceptions, which are rooted in transmysogynoir and cissexism. Participants will leave with tools to engage in dialogue on the “debate”, in addition to best practices for supporting and advocating for non-binary, trans, and intersex athletes at individual and institutional levels.
Within athletics, over half of LGBTQ+ individuals do not feel safe or supported by their coaches, trainers, and teammates (GLSEN, 2021). Especially now, non-binary and transgender athletes' inclusion and participation in athletics are being threatened by anti-trans legislation across the nation. It is critical that every individual has access to the current scientific, legal, social, and medical research that supports the inclusion of non-binary, transgender, and intersex athletes in sports.
Session Goals:
Understand assumptions, interactions and barriers that uniquely impact the experience of non-binary, trans, gender diverse, and intersex people in athletics (and/or discuss experiences within athletics if the group is primarily comprised of athletes)
Leave with peer reviewed resources/data and talking points to effectively engage in conversation on trans and intersex athletes that support inclusion (from a place of empowerment)
Further engage in and/or develop advocacy strategies for supporting non-binary, trans and intersex athletes (and/or for self advocacy)
Taking Up Space: Strategies for Addressing Cissexism and Transphobia at Work
Time: 11:45 am - 1:00 pm
Session Description:
Participants will engage in discussion and problem solving to develop and further strengthen strategies for self advocacy in our workplaces (and beyond). We will examine the unique systems of oppression experienced by non-binary and transgender individuals – transphobia, cisnormativity, and cisssexism – and how they intersect with other oppressive systems including racism, ableism, classism. This intersectional approach will allow us to identify effective advocacy strategies we can implement to be empowered in our workspaces. We will address advocacy strategies at the individual/relational, communal/group, institutional/organization, and societal/cultural levels. This session is conversational and driven by the identified needs of the unique group of attendees. All individuals are encouraged to actively participate.
Session Goals:
Identify and understand systems of oppression – transphobia, cisnormativity, and cissexism (gender based) and homophobia and heteronormativity (sexuality based)
Understand and identify unique microaggressions experienced by queer, non-binary and trans people
Leave with tangible tools and best practices to utilize as an effective ally in action to queer, non-binary and trans people and/or for self-advocacy
Sharing experiences and how to utilize advocacy tools to be proactive and/or reactive (scenarios practice)
